PE in the summer term for Year 4 sees them heading down to the Heford River once a week to learn to sail with the Helford River Trust.
Each year, trained instructors from the Sailing Trust work closely with our staff and volunteers to provide high-quality, safe and engaging sessions. Whether children are stepping into a boat for the first time or building on their existing skills, they are supported, encouraged, and inspired throughout every session.
Sailing offers far more than learning to handle a boat. It brings a wealth of physical, emotional and educational benefits, including:
Confidence and Independence Sailing encourages children to take responsibility for their own actions, make decisions, and manage a boat safely on the water. As pupils gain new skills and learn to navigate changing conditions, they develop a strong sense of independence and self‑belief.
Problem‑Solving and Critical Thinking Skills The dynamic nature of sailing requires children to assess their surroundings, respond to wind and weather changes, and make quick, informed decisions. This fosters resilience, strategic thinking, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
Physical Health and Coordination Sailing helps improve balance, core strength and overall coordination. It also promotes regular physical activity in an enjoyable, engaging environment.
Teamwork and Communication Whether sailing in pairs or working together onshore, pupils learn to communicate clearly, listen to others, and cooperate effectively.
Appreciation of the Natural Environment Sailing provides a unique and meaningful connection with the outdoors. Children develop an understanding of weather patterns, water safety and marine ecosystems, helping to foster environmental awareness and responsibility.
Personal Wellbeing Time spent on the water can boost pupils’ mental wellbeing. Sailing offers a sense of freedom, reduces stress, and provides opportunities for positive risk‑taking in a supportive, supervised setting.
